Meet the Team

James (Jim) Gastle, a registered Patent Agent in both Canada and the United States, graduated from Mechanical Engineering at Queen's University in 1984 and began a five-year internship in patent agency, including one year at the IP department of a Canadian forest products company and four years at a major downtown Toronto patent firm.

André Merizzi developed his patent practice working for boutique intellectual property firms in Montreal and Ottawa, before joining GASTLES in 2010. As a registered Patent Agent working mainly out of Ottawa, he now advises clients across the country on patent strategy and portfolio development, working closely with them to ensure their portfolio supports their business objectives.

Robert Hirons was awarded an Honours Degree in chemistry by the University of Birmingham, England in 1961, and started in the patent profession in England, in 1963. He moved to Canada in 1965 to join the in-house patent department of a petrochemicals company in Sarnia, Ontario, where, in 1968, he obtained his qualification as a Registered Patent Agent of Canada and the United States.

James D. Ramsbottom is a graduate of the Faculty of Science at McMaster University. He possesses two undergraduate degrees; a B.Sc. in Life Sciences and an Honours B.Sc. in Biology. In addition to his undergraduate degrees, he was a Doctoral graduate student in Molecular Pharmacology at the University of Trieste, Italy.

Laurette McCormick joined GASTLES in 2011 after working for a number of years as a technical associate for boutique intellectual property firms in Ottawa. Laurette obtained her Ph.D. in physics, with an emphasis in biophysics, from the University of Ottawa, after completing undergraduate studies in physics at Trent University.
